Abstract：Consistency is one of the most important factors in writing，the author illustrates the relation of the semantic meaning with structure and context in English writing with coherency in thesis. The thesis consists of introduction，theoretical framework，the inner and outer mechanism of coherency and conclusion.

1 Introduction

Consistency in discourse analysis is one of the most important contents focal issues. The thesis focuses on helping readers understand how these three elements are connected to ensure the consistency of the overall article. The thesis is divided into 5 parts： part 1 introduces the background，layout of the thesis； part 2 illustrates theoretical framework； part 3 demonstrates inner mechanism of coherency from the significance of the discourse cohesion means，the inner semantic relation of discourse coherence； part 4 describes the outer mechanism of coherency from situational，social cultural and cognitive psychological factor； the last paragraph comes to an conclusion for thesis.

2 Theoretical Framework of Coherency

Coherence refers to the main organizational principles of context，which assumes the ability to answer a potential functional connection in a spoken or written context（Crystal，1985）； Coherence means that the various concepts and relationships expressed in a context must be relevant to each other，so that we can make reasonable reasoning about the deep meaning of the context（1987）； Coherence is a sense to a text as a meaningful whole，not a meaningless stack（Mcarthy，1993）； Coherence is a psychological phenomenon，it exists in the mind of the speaker and can not find clues at the discourse level（Geoff Thompson，1996）. Although linguists haven’t provided a specific definition of coherence，the research results have shown that how to define coherence is closely related to linguists’ view of language and research perspective.

3 Inner Mechanism of Coherency

3.1 The Significance of the Discourse Cohesion Means

Sentences are used to organize the meaning of the context and the connection of sentences are regarded as cohesion. Cohesion realized by a textual structure，it’s an important means to ensure coherence in discourse meaning. Professor Hu Zhuanglin pointed out that it’s a necessary condition for discourse coherency to determine of the cohesive mechanism，that means the theory of coherence is untenable without cohesion（张德禄，2003）.

3.2 The Inner Semantic Relation of Discourse Coherence

One sentence includes the logical relation between words，phrases and clauses. No matter how author uses the vocabulary，each sentence in the paragraph is correct and meaning can be conveyed in a correct way，when the context is complete，it’s possible to improve the structure.

4 Outer Mechanism of Coherency

4.1 Situational Factor

Situational context plays a direct role in discourse coherence. The topic can provide the starting point for the narrative discourse； another one is the identity of subjects，the identity affects dialogue of verbal communication and the significance of the proper expression. So situation will restrict content and speech scope.

4.2 Social Cultural and Cognitive-psychological Factor

Influenced by social cultural factor，the situation and cognition cause the meaning of discourse is different，even same words have different meanings in different contexts. For example，“dragon” symbolizes the highest rights in Chinese culture，but it’s regarded as an evil in western countries.

5 Conclusion

The paper describes introduction and theoretical framework，secondly from inner mechanism of coherence to show the influence of vocabulary in English writing cannot be ignored. It also demonstrates outer mechanism of coherence to indicate the three factors affect the consistency of semantic meaning with structure and context. Only grasp the relation between lexical，sentences and context coherence，can we realize semantic meaning，context and overall structure of the article better consistency.
